Hydrological Drivers of Bedload Transport in an Alpine Watershed

چکیده
Understanding and predicting bedload transport is an important element of watershed management. Yet, predictions remain uncertain by up to several order(s) magnitude. In this contribution, we use a five-year continuous time-series streamflow monitoring in 13.4 km2 snow-dominated Alpine the Western Swiss Alps investigate hydrological drivers transport. Following calibration sensors, quantification hydraulic forcing upon bedload, analysis performed identify daily flow hydrographs influenced different drivers: rainfall, snowmelt, combined rain snowmelt events. We then quantify their respective contribution Results emphasize importance events, for both annual volumes (77% on average) peaks rate. A non-negligible, but smaller, amount may occur during late summer autumn storms, once baseflow have significantly decreased (9% volume average). Although rainfall-driven changes are responsible large majority (86% average), identified melt-only events also represent substantial (14 % The results study help improve current through better understanding magnitude-frequency relationship under conditions. further discuss how could evolve changing climate its effects hydrology.

Analysis of bedload transport in laminar flows
Bedload transport generally depends on the bed shear stress and Reynolds number. Many studies conducted for the condition of turbulent flows have revealed the dependence of the transport rate on the bed shear stress, while knowledge of the Reynolds number effect on the transport rate is very limited. As an extreme case to reflect the viscous effect on sediment transport, sediment transport in l...
متن کاملSnow Accumulation and Distribution in an Alpine Watershed
Distribution of snow water equivalence (SWE) was measured in the Emerald Lake watershed located in Sequoia National Park, California, by taking hundreds of depth measurements and density profiles at six locations during the 1986, 1987 and 1988 water years. A stratified sampling scheme was evaluated by identifying and mapping zones of similar snow properties on the basis of topographic parameter...
متن کاملExponential Formula for Bedload Transport
An exponential formula that does not involve the concept of the critical shear stress is derived in this study for computing bedload transport rates. The formula represents well various experimental data sets ranging from the weak transport to high shear conditions. Comparisons of the present study are also made with many previous bedload formulas commonly cited in the literature.
متن کاملOn ALADIN precipitation modeling and validation in an Alpine watershed
Highly resolved precipitation forecasts are necessary in many applications, especially in mountain meteorology and flash flood forecasts for smallto medium-sized alpine watersheds. Here we present precipitation forecasts simulated by the limited area model ALADIN applying different grid resolutions (1x = 10 km and 4 km). Target area of the investigations is the Alpine Ticino-Verzasca-Maggia wat...
متن کاملBedload and Suspended Sediment of a Watershed Impacted by Dams
Sediment transport relates to suspended sediment and bedload. The suspended sedi‐ ment plays the most important role on the land-ocen sediment flux. On the other hand, the bedload should be considered in order to assess the impacts of dams on sediment transport and sediment yield. Recent effects of dam construction have been widely reported. The sediment load has been reduced by more than 75% f...
